Welcome to our Physical Theater Weekend Workshop! This workshop is intended for performers in all stages of training. Over 2 days, students participate in games & performance projects designed to elicit vocal & physical freedom. The weekend includes elements of Viewpoints, Commedia dell’arte, and Theatrical Clown - a form of physical acting that invites actors to come as they are, shake off their social mask & explore the benefits of laughter through movement, performance & playful improvisation.

Matthew Bretschneider, MSW (he/him) is Founding Artistic Director of Studio Playground. He is an Adjunct Professor at Boston University and Salve Regina University. Off-Broadway: The Erlkings. Regional theater: Huntington Theatre Company(Romeo & Juliet, Tartuffe, Ah! Wilderness, Dead End, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead Common Ground: Revisited, The Lehman Trilogy), Kitchen Theater Company (Peter & the Starcatcher, Seminar, The House), The Flea Theater, Theatre Row, The New Ohio, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Kitchen Theatre Company, and Boston Playwrights’ Theatre. Television Credits include Law & Order: SVU & The Path. Matthew received an MSW from Rhode Island College School of Social Work. He has a depth of experience teaching theater in clinical spaces, focusing on self-acceptance & empowerment. Matthew received a BFA from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and has studied with The Pandemonium Studio, Movement Theater Studio & The Clown School. He trained extensively with Christopher Bayes & studied physical acting with Norman Taylor, Mary Overlie, Orlando Pabotoy, Shannan Calcutt, David Bridel & Gabriel Levey. Matthew has taught physical theater for Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, Trinity Repertory Company, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, Rhode Island College, University of Rhode Island, Dean College & Suffolk University.

Classes begin with a vocal & movement warm-up and include class discussion with applications for audition techniques, character development, and approaching given circumstances in scenes and monologues. The workshop includes individual work, working with a scene partner, and ensemble exercises. There will be a 30-minute break each day for lunch and short breaks as needed.

Movement Weekend Workshop

Transform pedestrian movement into dance through observation, playful improvisation, and physical exercises. Not an experienced dancer? No worries! This class focuses on guiding participants to create movement phrases which enhance expression and narrative storytelling. Students will explore elements of choreography, clown, and ensemble dance.

Theater Education for Young Audiences

This class introduces foundational concepts for theater education and their applications in a variety of settings for youth audiences. Students participate in games based in movement, physical theater, playful improvisation, and theatrical clown. Students deepen their understanding of concepts related to social-emotional learning, cultural representation, and the benefits of performing arts for young audiences with class discussions on a variety of topics, including verbal and nonverbal storytelling, multimodal learning, theater therapy, theater for social justice.

Alexander Crespo-Rosario II (he/him) is a Native Taino born in Puerto Rico (Boríken). He began his career as a B-boy representing the All-City Rockers hip-hop crew and has continued to expand his skills through other artistic forms. Theatre credits include Trinity Rep: Ariel, La Tempestad, Phaedra/Cagelle, La Cage aux Folles,Carlos, La Broa’ (Broad Street), Stan, Becky Nurse of Salem, Tobias Ragg, Sweeney Todd, u/s Fezziwig/Benedict, A Christmas Carol; Teatro en El Verano: La Mancha; Burbage Theatre Company: WITCH, JUNK. Crespo currently resides in Providence, Rhode Island as an assistant teacher at PVD Prep Charter School, an artistic associate at Studio Playground, and a dance captain/counselor with Trinity Rep’s YASI summer program. Lin-Manuel Miranda Family Fellow, Forman Scholarship Recipient in Dance, Certificate of Merit: Outstanding Ensemble Member. Education: BFA, Rhode Island College.
